10 Tanzanian foods and their price

One of the great things about Tanzania is how affordable and accessible food is. Scattered throughout cities and towns are people selling all kinds of ready-to-eat food. In this post, I want to share with you 10 foods that I eat a lot as well as their price. The food is delicious and almost always safe to eat. I encourage all tourists in Tanzania to eat different foods from various vendors. Even if there is a language barrier, the locals are usually more than happy to help you out.

These prices are as of 2023

Chips with fried chicken is a late-night favorite often served with spices and tomato sauce

  • Wali maharage ( Rice and beans)

This dish is a local favorite. The prices can vary depending on the sides such as meat or fish

  • Ugali mboga (Ugali with vegetables)

This is perhaps one of Africa’s most iconic meals. Ugali is cooked cornflour that is served with a vegetable like okra, leafy greens, or beans

  • Soup

Tanzania has amazing soups that are made with beef, chicken, and all kinds of fish. The prices vary, but unless you’re at a fancy western restaurant, soup should not be more than 5000TSH

This squid soup in Bagamoyo cost me TSH 5,000

Snacks (Udambudambu)

  • Kitumbua (This has no English name but I guess the closes would be ‘rice fritter’)

This is a very rich food that is unique to Tanzania. It is like a fried donut made from rice. This is one of my favorite snacks.

TSH100-200

  • Mandazi ( Fried bread)

Although not known for their Mandazi like Kenya, mandazi is a popular breakfast item across the country.

TSH100-200

  • Uji (Porridge)

There are so many different kinds of porridge sold in Tanzania. My favorite is Zanzibar porridge which is made from rice and coconuts. There is also porridge made from millet, wheat, and corn.
